Food/Alcohol:

The Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge is a licenced café as well as an accommodation. We do not have self-catering facilities. By law, the only alcohol allowed on site is via our licensed bar/café which features local craft beers, cider, choice wines and spirits.

Dinner: Our 2-course 'meal of the day' is served at 6.30pm. Pre-bookings are essential for this meal, so if you have not already booked, please ensure you contact us to do so. Meal cost is $40.00 per person. If you have not booked we will presume you have made dinner arrangements elsewhere.

Upon check-in, we’ll ask if you’d like to sign up for an 8.30am cooked breakfast. Continental breakfast is included in your room tariff and can be taken at your leisure.

Please ensure that we are aware of any dietary requirements your group may have prior to your arrival.


Check in/out times:

The Lodge and your room will be available to check in from 3.00pm. During our high season (October through April), our cafe is open from 10am, so you are welcome to arrive earlier than the 3pm check-in time. Please note that during our off season (May through September) our cafe is not open so we will not be on site to welcome you until 3pm. If you expect to arrive after 8.00pm, please let us know in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements to check you in. Also note that as dinner is served at 6.30pm, any arrivals after this time will need to make their own dinner arrangements elsewhere.
Your check-out time is 10.00am, to allow us enough time to tidy up for the next guests.


How to find us:

The Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge is a 50km drive north of Westport. From State Highway 67, follow the sign to ‘Seddonville’ and ‘The Old Ghost Road’. If you cross the long one-way bridge across the Mokihinui River you have gone too far. Proceed straight through Seddonville (straight past the blue Seddonville Hotel – do not turn right here), and straight past the farmhouse at the end of Mokihinui Road. You will be on a gravel road for 1.7km before reaching a concrete bridge/ford at Burke Creek. Cross the Burke Creek Ford and follow the signs to the lodge, 800m further on. Allow 45 minutes to comfortably reach the lodge from Westport. Note: There are no petrol stations between Westport and the Rough and Tumble; you may wish to fill your tank in Westport.

On rare occasions when there has been very heavy rain, the concrete ford at Burke Creek is temporarily impassable. Please don't cross the bridge/ford if the water is overtopping the bridge deck. There is parking at the ford, and a footbridge just downstream for safe access. If necessary, we can meet you there and assist with luggage, etc. All very easy, and part of the Rough and Tumble experience!


What to bring:

Raincoats, insect repellant, mountain bikes, fishing gear and licences, soft shoes for the inside and a spirit of relaxation.

The main Lodge has board games, plenty of books and magazines to curl up with, and a 40" television with Freeview channels. A phone in the main Lodge is available for guests (a phone card is necessary for non-local cards, we recommend KiaOra). Wifi is available in the main Lodge. There is no cellphone reception in the immediate area.

Cancellation Policy


To make a booking cancellation or amendment, please email info@roughandtumble.co.nz with your booking reference number, name and a clear description of what change(s) you wish to make. Cancellation and/or amendment requests must be made by the person who made the initial booking.

Any charges resulting from amendments or additions to bookings will be charged to the credit card that made the inital booking payment. 

Cancellations (whether in part or full):

‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎◦ Notified more than 3 months prior to your arrival date are eligible for a 100% refund (of the cancelled portion)..
‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎◦ Notified between 3 months and 21 days prior to your arrival date are eligible for an 80% refund (of the cancelled portion).
‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ◦ Notified between 21 days and 72 hours prior to 12 noon on your arrival date are eligible for a 50% refund (of the cancelled portion).
‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎◦ Notified less than 72 hours prior to 12 noon on your arrival date, or at any point following, are ineligible for any refund (i.e. 100% forfeiture of the cancelled portion).

Amendments (e.g. changes to booking dates:

‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎◦ Notified more than 21 days prior to your arrival date will not be subject to an amendment fee.
‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ◦ Notified between 21 days and 72 hours prior to 12 noon on your arrival date will be subject to a $30 amendment fee.
‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎◦ Notified less than 72 hours prior to 12 noon on your arrival date will be subject to a $50 amendment fee.
‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎◦ Notified after 12 noon on your arrival date will be treated as cancellations and will be subject to new booking costs.

Where an amendment transfers your booking into a higher rate season, the uplift will be payable. Where an amendment transfers your booking into a lower rate season, no refund will apply.

Prices are subject to change. Where a price lesser than you paid becomes available, no refund or post-purchase price adjustment will apply to your existing booking.

Child Policy

Children (0-16yrs) are welcome.
Children aged two and above will count toward the guest total number.
