Due to popular demand the Department of Conservation has developed a ballot system for hunters wishing to hunt during the Roar period. The ballot is to ensure hunters have access to an area with the knowledge that only one hunting party of up to 5 hunters will be present in each of the blocks for a 7 day period.

Payment Policy
Ballot applications not abiding by rules will be withdrawn and party leaders and all party members named on the application will not be considered for the next two years ballot.
Payment of $NZ 40 per party ballot application fee is payable at time application is submitted.
All information provided will be used by DOC solely for purposes for which it is gathered in accordance with the Privacy act 2020. By submitting this form the Applicant consents to the disclosure of their name, contact details and the dates of any permits issued to other hunters holding permits who may request this information from DOC for purposes of co-ordinating transport arrangements to and from authorised hunting blocks.
Each balloted block has it's own set of conditions and rules. By accepting the right to hunt on a block you agree to abide by the blocks conditions and rules.
A maximum of 5 hunters as named on the application and permit may be in block for the time period allocated.
Where blocks adjoin farmland you will have special conditions on your permit, you must advise the land holder of your intentions.
Hunting during the hours of darkness is prohibited.
Hunters using a firearm must abide by the NZ Police Arms Code and hold a valid firearms licence.
To encourage full utilisation of the hunting blocks, any applicants who do not wish to use their ballot permit are asked to cancel it by contacting Haast Hunting Ballots.
No dogs are permitted in blocks within National Park, Kiwi Sanctuary or Wildlife Reserves
Cancellation Policy
$NZ40 application fee is non refundable.
